About the target
The Dumbbell Nebula (also known as Messier 27, M 27, or NGC 6853) is a planetary nebula (opens in a new tab) (PN) in the constellation (opens in a new tab) Vulpecula (opens in a new tab), at a distance of about 1,360 light years (opens in a new tab).This object was the first planetary nebula (opens in a new tab) to be discovered; by Charles Messier (opens in a new tab) in 1764. At its brightness of visual magnitude (opens in a new tab) 7.5 and its diameter of about 8 arcminutes (opens in a new tab), it is easily visible in binoculars, and a popular observing target in amateur telescopes (opens in a new tab).
